The Optical Assistant
The Optical Assistant is an individual who fits corrective eyewear as prescribed by an optometrist or ophthalmologist. The Optical Assistant may verify and prepare eyeglasses and other optical devices. The Optical Assistant’s role in the eye care delivery system is prescription analysis and interpretation, determination of lenses best suited for an individual’s needs, frame selection and lifestyle dispensing, measuring and fitting eyewear and ensuring accuracy of the finished product prior to delivery to the patient. The Optical Assistant Training Program is designed to make the graduate an effective problem solver capable of working independently. The curriculum includes hands-on practice allowing the student to gain valuable experience prior to entering the workforce. A rapid expansion of the optical industry brought about by the aging of the population, the entry of fashion design into the eyewear market, and various new vision enhancing fields has created tremendous job opportunities. Graduates of the Optical Assistant Training Program are eligible to utilize our outstanding job placement assistance and resume development. We maintain an active database of employers who are currently seeking qualified optical personnel. We regularly conduct employer surveys to determine the level of satisfaction those employers find in our graduates.
About the Instructor
Our instructor, Suzanne Turcios-Tendick, ABOC, has 29 years’ experience in the optical field, holds a Vocational Education Teaching Credential, and has been an instructor for 11 years. She maintains ABO Certification and has a BA in Speech and Communications. She is regarded as an expert by her peers and her reputation is one of excellence.
About the Training
Our Optical Assistant Training Program is recognized as the premier training program for Optical Assistants in Northern California. The curriculum is divided into six four-week modules each designed to be taught by itself. Students may enter the program at the beginning of any module. This arrangement allows the student to start their training on a monthly basis. Included in the training is an apprenticeship and thorough review for the national certification examination. Small class sizes and individual attention are the hallmarks of the Optical Assistant Training Program.
